The Royal College of Emergency Medicine

Scottish EM clinical conference

When: 15 – 16 May 2024
Where: Apex City Quay Hotel, Dundee

Join us in Dundee for the Scottish EM clinical conference 2024. This is a must attend event for the Scottish EM community, featuring the latest clinical updates, as well as student and free papers presentations.

Agents of change

When: 21 May 2024
Where: Online

This study day will give delegates the knowledge and practical skills to support people in the emergency department to stay healthy and prevent future illness. By intervening staff can make an enormous difference to patient’s immediate and future health and help reduce the growing need for emergency care.

Delegates will hear from leading experts in behaviour change and see role-plays of how an intervention could be administered in practice. The role plays will be conducted with individuals with experience of addiction who can share their views on receiving these sorts of interventions.

Learning objectives:

  • Gain an understanding of the evidence base for preventive interventions in the emergency department.
  • Recognise the range of risk factors that could be addressed.
  • Learn how to deliver a rapid preventive intervention in the emergency department as well as the potential pit-falls.

RCEM EDI study day: Change begins with me

When: 23 May 2024
Where: Online

In line with the recommendations of the recently published NHS Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Improvement Plan, this inspirational and enlightening educational programme will educate and empower emergency physicians to develop essential EDI management and leadership skills required to improve experiences and outcomes of marginalised patients and colleagues in EM and the wider NHS.

Delegates will be given an overview of EDI in the NHS and will be taught key EDI principles and skills. The objectives are to examine and acknowledge the history and evidence and develop reflective practice skills to become effective EDI innovators and culturally competent leaders of the future.

The key topics covered:

  • The history of race, gender and medicine, including social determinants of health and key health inequities
  • MWRES, IMGs and differential attainment
  • Understanding disability and neurodiversity
  • Identity, social lens and bias
  • How to be an effective ally and advocate

RCEM research engagement day: Diverse and inclusive research within UK emergency medicine

When: 24 May 2024
Where: RCEM Octavia House, London

Join us for our annual research engagement day for all health professionals and research teams involved in EM research. This year the focus of the event is on diverse and inclusive research within UK EM. The event also includes practical tips on how to get involved in research and expand your research portfolio plus interactive networking sessions.

Learning objectives:

  • Meet and network with other clinicians interested in EM research from around the UK
  • Understand ways to improve how EM research can be more representative of the population that attends ED
  • How to make SLO10 work for you (including as a trainer)
  • Identify studies that you can get involved in
  • Understand the impact and benefits of working within a diverse research team, and consider what you would contribute to a team

Careers day

When: 29 May 2024
Where: RCEM Octavia House, London

This event will provide a variety of talks about training in Emergency Medicine as well as the various sub-specialty and flexible options. Delegates will also have the opportunity to participate in a choice of two clinically-based interactive workshops. There will also been a panel discussion at the end of the day where they can ask any un-answered questions. Speakers are a mixture of consultants and registrars.

Learning objectives:

  • To provide information and inspiration using factual and honest talks
  • To hold an interactive workshop allowing delegates to get involved in scenarios based on real-life situations
  • To answer delegates’ questions about having a career in emergency medicine

ACP conference

When: 4 – 5 June 2024
Where: Doubletree by Hilton Glasgow Central

Join us in Glasgow for the ACP conference 2024!
This ever popular event will move to a 2-day conference for the very first time this year and is a must attend event for the ACP community, where a wide range of speakers will be presenting on common and less frequently seen conditions in adult and paediatric practice, relevant to trainee and qualified Advanced Clinical Practitioners in the Emergency Department.

Older people in the ED: Focus on frailty

When: 11 June 2024
Where: Online

Following the first successful study day hosted by the RCEM Older Person in Emergency Medicine (OPEM) Special Interest Group, we are pleased to host a second ‘Focus on Frailty’ study day.

During this study day we will follow the patient journey of an older aged patient living with frailty, presenting to the Emergency Department with a fall, considering:

  • Initial trauma assessment
  • Possible traumatic injuries by body systems – chest, abdomen/pelvis and skeletal
  • Use of the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) in the ED
  • End of life care

Pre hospital emergency medicine

When: 13 June 2024
Where: Leonardo Hotel, Cardiff

Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine covers a multitude of clinical subjects, but this conference goes beyond just the clinical aspects and concentrates on the clinicians delivering PHEM. There are sessions on diversity, ethnicity and inclusion as well as looking at career development in PHEM beyond clinical shifts and leadership training. Guest lecturers cover management education in PHEM, legal aspects to PHEM and is an MBA applicable to PHEM.

For those looking to apply to PHEM, there are invaluable sessions from the Intercollegiate Board for Training in PHEM (IBTPHEM) and a frank and transparent lecture from a current Training Program Director.
The event will provide an insight into careers in PHEM and will be useful for clinicians considering long-term working in PHEM and Consultant Educational Supervisors that support trainees with future career choices.

This RCEM event has a very different flavour to traditional PHEM Conferences with very various views and lectures for an ever-changing sub-speciality.

Northern Ireland CPD day

When: 14 June 2024
Where: Clayton Hotel, Belfast

This event is aimed at all grades of EM clinicians and covers a broad range of CPD topics. The day starts with an early morning discussion on agricultural trauma followed by sessions on mental health, ECHO and haematological emergencies. The event will also take time to celebrate excellence within Northern Ireland, with the top QIPs from this year being presented.

Learning objectives:

  • To provide an update on EM specific issues in Northern Ireland
  • To give focused CPD from regional and national experts
  • To celebrate and share local QI initiatives undertaken in NI EDs

PEM conference

When: 15 June 2024
Where: City Hall, Sunderland

Join us for the first time in Sunderland for the annual PEM conference. We have an exciting day planned with speakers from across the region sharing their expertise on topics including extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation, paediatric trauma and the pearls of point of care ultrasound in the paediatric emergency department as well as research updates and oral abstract presentations. We look forward to seeing you there!

The learning objectives of this event are:

  • To improve knowledge of common paediatric presentations to the PED and how best to manage these
  • To understand the role of ECPR in paediatrics and lessons learnt
  • To keep up to date with research and the latest evidence-based medicine in PEM

Emergency hypnosis in the ED

When: 4 July 2024
Where: RCEM Octavia House, London

Hypnosis is an evidenced technique for improving quality of care for patients and staff wellbeing. For clinicians, it increases relaxation, wellbeing and prevention of burnout. There is benefit for the patient as an adjuvant in managing a wide variety of ailments. This day will introduce you to some simple relaxation and hypnosis techniques you can start to use immediately.

Learning objectives:

  • To consider the structure of hypnotic language and ways to incorporate it into daily practice
  • To develop awareness of where and when hypnosis might be used in the emergency department and to know the indications and contraindications
  • To learn about the potential applications of hypnosis in EM, including phobias and pain management
  • To have awareness of informal techniques that will benefit patients
  • To have the option of experiencing a light hypnotic trance

GreenED: Environmental sustainability in the ED

When: 9 July 2024
Where: Online

This study day takes an in-depth look at how we can reduce the environmental impact of the care we provide, how the climate and ecological crisis affects the health of our patients and will empower you to address these issues in the healthcare system.

We will outline how emergency care is contributing to the climate crisis and how the system is attempting to respond to this.

You will learn from the first hand experience of emergency departments undertaking Green ED accreditation on how to run a successful sustainability project

We will hear from emergency care professionals from around the world on how they are managing the health effects of climate change on their populations as well as from organisations related to health about the importance of the healthcare voice in advocating for societal action.

SECEM: South east conference of EM

Clinical toxicology

The clinical toxicology study day will provide acute and emergency physicians with the latest management in treating poisoning from common and more unusual toxins.

Sustainable working practices: Are you thriving or surviving?

When: 5 September 2024

This event aims to present the latest evidence related to wellbeing and burnout, and talk about the current resources, mentoring and training available for the departmental leads and role models to implement it locally, as well as examples of good practice.

Learning objectives:

  • To provide guidance and mentoring to local leads, physicians and volunteers from all backgrounds
  • To enable delegates to implement back to basics work, wellness resources and mentorship in their trusts.

Caring for patients with learning disability, autism or complex needs in the ED

When: 12 September 2024
Where: Online

Autistic people and people with a learning disability face health inequalities, are likely to die earlier and are more likely to die from a treatable cause of death. This event looks at the reasons and discusses opportunities to enhance care. We’ll hear from public health experts, learning disability specialists, allied health professionals, patients, families and ED physicians and explore the patient’s pathway through the ED and the role emergency staff play in improving outcomes.

Updates in paediatric emergency medicine by APEM

Join us in Gateshead for updates in paediatric emergency medicine, a one-day event delivered by the Association of Paediatric Emergency Medicine as part of the RCEM Annual Scientific Conference 2024.

Annual Scientific Conference 2024

When: 8 – 10 October 2024
Where: The Glasshouse, Gateshead and online

The Annual Scientific Conference highlighted cutting-edge research in emergency medicine from national and international speakers. The conference covered a range of evidence into practice, evidence based medicine and hot off the press sessions on EM related studies.

Highlights of this event will include the prestigious David Williams Lecture, and RCEM President Dr Adrian Boyle’s Presidential Address. Abstract submissions close on Friday 14 June at 12:00 (BST).

CESR applicants training day

When: 8 November 2024
Where: The Studio, Manchester

This event will benefit those who intend, or are in the process of, submitting a CESR application in Emergency Medicine for entry to the Specialist Register. The programme will include an overview of the CESR process, guidance on what evidence to submit, tips from those who have submitted successful CESR applications, a practical exercise discussing evidence from a real application, and a Q&A session.

Delegates should come away with a good understanding of the CESR application process, and a clear idea of requirements with regard to experience and evidence.
