What Does the MRCEM SBA Course Cover?

This course covers the areas tested in the MRCEM SBA exam. 31 broad areas, each with detailed lists are in the RCEM syllabus. This course aims to sample from across this range using our experience, gained across many years of designing courses, in identifying both the subjects more likely to be assessed in the examination and also the degree of difficulty typical of questions in the examination.

When you register on the course you will have immediate access to our MRCEM SBA online videos. This extensive set of video recordings provides carefully targeted information and clear explanations across the syllabus. These videos can also be accessed through our app (Android and iPhone). The video set also includes six, 15 question, practice papers to help you identify your strengths and weaknesses.

You will continue to have access to our online videos from the end of the course until after the exam itself.

MRCEM SBA Intermediate Course

What is the Structure of the Course?

About one week before the course you will receive two practice papers in advance (a total of 90 questions). These should be completed before arrival.

On the first morning we will start by discussing the first two papers sent in advance. After each paper has been discussed we will provide answer copies which include detailed background knowledge, guidelines, explanations, diagrams and so on. On the afternoon of the first day there will be a third 45 question paper to be completed in an hour in class, which is then discussed in detail.

On the second day, three further 45 question papers are undertaken and discussed in detail. Again, answer copies with specifically focused background information are provided. The final paper is undertaken in an online quiz format so that you can compare your responses, in real time, with those of others on the course.

The discussions across both days are recorded and are available as a video link the day after the course so you can go back over any specific discussions or explanations as you need to.

What are the Benefits of Taking the MRCEM SBA Course?

You will learn how to manage single best answer (SBA) questions. Through undertaking our practice papers and the discussions in class you will come to understand what the college is looking for and how to choose between options which may appear only subtly different.

By the end of this course, you will understand those areas in which you need to do most revision, understand how questions in this exam are designed and the techniques required to answer them and you will understand a high proportion of the difficult areas within the curriculum.

FAQ

The MRCEM SBA exam will sample the RCEM Clinical Syllabus and will test a sound understanding of the full range of conditions and presentations that may present to the ED. It samples how the trainee synthesises and interprets data and clinical findings to make decisions and inform management plans.

The exam will have 180 questions which will be answered in four hours, presented as two 90 question papers with two hours per paper sat on the same day.

The MRCEM Intermediate SBA is the second exam required for MRCEM and is open to candidates who have passed the MRCEM Primary (or equivalent) exam.  There is no eligibility requirement for experience in EM but candidates will find this beneficial. Applicants are required to hold a medical qualification approved by the General Medical Council (GMC) for the purposes of registration and are required to have completed the UK training programme or equivalent (and submit electronic evidence at the point of application.)

The examination is conducted in English and candidates are advised that IELTS Level 7 is the expected standard for completion of MRCEM and FRCEM examinations.

Candidates must apply for the exam online, during the published application window.

Applications will open at 10.00am on the morning of the application opening date listed on the Exam Calendar and close automatically at 5.00pm (UK time) on the listed closing date. Applications must be completed before 5.00pm on the closing date, late applications will not be accepted.
See Applications page

The MRCEM SBA is machine marked, a correct answer is awarded 1 mark and an incorrect answer is awarded 0, negative marking does not apply.  The cut score for the exam is determined using the Angoff method, +1 Standard Error Measurement is added to create the pass mark.
